Troubleshooting Frequent Fault Codes in Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive M Drives

Bosch Rexroth’s IndraDrive M platform is a modular common-bus system pairing HMS single-axis or HMD dual-axis inverters with HMV power supplies. These drives are reliable workhorses, yet production can halt when a fault appears. The sections below focus on the codes technicians see most often—what they mean, checks to run first, and practical fixes.

Thermal Faults

F218 — Drive Amplifier Overtemperature

Exceeding thermal limits usually points to restricted airflow, failed blowers, tight mounting, or a hot cabinet (full performance typically to ~45 °C ambient). Confirm fans spin, clean fins/vents, ensure spacing, and improve enclosure cooling if needed. If trips continue under normal temps, the blower or temperature sensor may be faulty.

F219 — Motor Overtemperature

Most often caused by mechanical overload or failed motor cooling. Reduce load/duty cycle, verify the fan and clear all vents, check thermistor wiring, and confirm the configured motor matches the nameplate so thermal modeling is valid.

Power Stage Faults

F226 — DC Bus Undervoltage

Typical after mains sags or if the main disconnect is opened while axes are enabled. Ensure your sequence performs a controlled stop (drop enable) before cutting power, stabilize the facility supply, and secure DC-bus links between HMV and HMS/HMD.

Regen Overvoltage Scenarios (F220/F224)

Fast decel of high-inertia loads returns energy to the DC bus. Extend decel ramps, verify brake resistor value/health or active-regen function, and size common-bus braking for the largest regenerating axis.

F860 / F861 — Overcurrent & Ground Faults

Usually wiring/motor insulation issues or a failed output transistor. Inspect and megger cables and motor; if they pass, service the drive’s output stage. Avoid repeated resets without finding the cause.

Feedback & Encoder Faults

F229 — Quadrature/Encoder Error

Keep feedback away from motor power runs, ground shields at the drive end, verify pinouts after any re-termination, and consider ferrites or rerouting if noise is observed. Replace suspect cables and validate clean waveforms where possible.

Signal Amplitude Too Low

Common with sin/cos encoders. Match encoder type in parameters to the hardware, confirm supply voltage at the connector, check intermediate junctions, and realign or replace a failing encoder as needed.

Parameter & Setup Errors (C-Codes)

C201 / C202 — Invalid or Out-of-Range Parameter

Use the diagnostic buffer to identify the offending parameter. If parameters were migrated after a replacement/firmware change, perform a basic parameter load and re-enter application values within valid limits, ensuring options in hardware match configuration.

C204 / C210 — Feedback/Motor Mismatch

Select the correct motor from the database or enter nameplate values; set the correct encoder type. Disable unused secondary encoder channels so the drive can enable cleanly after commissioning.

Reset & Prove-Out

  1. Eliminate the root cause (cooling, power stability, wiring/insulation, configuration).

  2. Acknowledge the fault and re-enable the drive.

  3. Perform a low-speed test move while monitoring temperatures, DC bus, and feedback quality.
