Applies to HMS single-axis inverters, HMD dual-axis inverters, and HMV power supply units (IndraDrive M, not Cs)
Bosch Rexroth’s IndraDrive M platform is a modular common-bus system pairing HMS single-axis or HMD dual-axis inverters with HMV power supplies. These drives are reliable workhorses, yet production can halt when a fault appears. The sections below focus on the codes technicians see most often—what they mean, checks to run first, and practical fixes.
Exceeding thermal limits usually points to restricted airflow, failed blowers, tight mounting, or a hot cabinet (full performance typically to ~45 °C ambient). Confirm fans spin, clean fins/vents, ensure spacing, and improve enclosure cooling if needed. If trips continue under normal temps, the blower or temperature sensor may be faulty.
Most often caused by mechanical overload or failed motor cooling. Reduce load/duty cycle, verify the fan and clear all vents, check thermistor wiring, and confirm the configured motor matches the nameplate so thermal modeling is valid.
Typical after mains sags or if the main disconnect is opened while axes are enabled. Ensure your sequence performs a controlled stop (drop enable) before cutting power, stabilize the facility supply, and secure DC-bus links between HMV and HMS/HMD.
Fast decel of high-inertia loads returns energy to the DC bus. Extend decel ramps, verify brake resistor value/health or active-regen function, and size common-bus braking for the largest regenerating axis.
Usually wiring/motor insulation issues or a failed output transistor. Inspect and megger cables and motor; if they pass, service the drive’s output stage. Avoid repeated resets without finding the cause.
Keep feedback away from motor power runs, ground shields at the drive end, verify pinouts after any re-termination, and consider ferrites or rerouting if noise is observed. Replace suspect cables and validate clean waveforms where possible.
Common with sin/cos encoders. Match encoder type in parameters to the hardware, confirm supply voltage at the connector, check intermediate junctions, and realign or replace a failing encoder as needed.
Use the diagnostic buffer to identify the offending parameter. If parameters were migrated after a replacement/firmware change, perform a basic parameter load and re-enter application values within valid limits, ensuring options in hardware match configuration.
Select the correct motor from the database or enter nameplate values; set the correct encoder type. Disable unused secondary encoder channels so the drive can enable cleanly after commissioning.
Eliminate the root cause (cooling, power stability, wiring/insulation, configuration).
Acknowledge the fault and re-enable the drive.
Perform a low-speed test move while monitoring temperatures, DC bus, and feedback quality.
Code(s) | Category | Meaning | Quick Actions |
F218 | Thermal | Drive amplifier overtemperature | Verify fans; clear fins/vents; improve cabinet cooling; service blower/sensor if needed |
F219 | Thermal | Motor overtemperature | Reduce load; confirm motor fan; inspect thermistor wiring; verify motor setup |
F226 | Power | DC bus undervoltage | Stabilize AC supply; ensure controlled stop before mains off; secure DC-bus links |
F220 / F224 | Power / Regen | Brake resistor overload / Braking time exceeded | Lengthen decel ramps; size/replace resistor; add regen capacity/active regen |
F860 / F861 | Current | Overcurrent / Ground fault (likely short or insulation failure) | Inspect cables/connectors; megger P-P & P-G; repair wiring/motor; service drive stage if needed |
F229 | Feedback | Quadrature/encoder signal error | Separate power/feedback runs; fix shield/ground; correct pinout; replace noisy cable |
Signal amplitude low | Feedback | Encoder amplitude below spec | Match encoder type; verify supply V; realign/replace encoder; add proper termination |
C201 / C202 | Setup/Params | Invalid or out-of-range parameter | Identify via diagnostic buffer; load defaults if needed; re-enter valid values |
C204 / C210 | Setup/Feedback | Motor/feedback mismatch or missing secondary encoder | Select correct motor/encoder; disable unused channel; recommission feedback |
Tip: After any fix, clear the fault and run a low-speed test while watching DC bus, temperatures, and feedback quality.
