The KDA 2.1-100-3-D0S-W1 is a drive unit produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the KDA Spindle Drives series. It controls three-phase spindle motors in CNC machining centers, converting regulated DC bus energy into precise current and voltage patterns that match programmed speed profiles. Inside a machining cell it links the central supply module with feedback devices, ensuring stable acceleration, constant surface speed, and repeatable tool positioning even when the mechanical load changes quickly.

The heatsink blower draws power from an auxiliary line rated at 220 V AC at 50–60 Hz, so the cooling fan can run whenever cabinet mains are present. The power section itself is supplied by an intermediate circuit of 300 VDC, and its output stage is dimensioned for a continuous drive current of 100 A; this current limit defines the maximum continuous torque a connected spindle motor can receive. Thermal energy is removed through a mounted heatsink blower, a hardware arrangement that directs airflow across the power transistors instead of relying on natural convection. Speed references arrive as a digital 16-bit parallel word, allowing the controller to issue 65,536 discrete velocity commands without an analog-to-digital conversion step.

The environmental envelope ranges from 5 °C to 45 °C, so cabinet conditioning must keep intake air within that span for continuous duty. Operation remains validated up to 1000 m above sea level, beyond which derating may be required because thinner air reduces cooling efficiency. For commissioning and diagnostics the unit provides a serial link that follows the RS-232-C standard, enabling parameter uploads or real-time status queries from a laptop or HMI. Heat dissipation is further supported by forced cooling, maintaining component temperatures well below their maximum junction ratings even during prolonged high-speed machining cycles. The design omits a second encoder input, so multi-channel feedback must be handled at the system level.
