The KDA 3.1-050-3-DP0-W1 spindle drive is produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the KDA Spindle Drives series. Designed to regulate high-speed machining spindles, this unit converts a fixed intermediate DC bus into a variable three-phase output so CNC controllers can maintain precise tool speed and torque profiles. As a dedicated spindle drive, it forms the axis-specific portion of an Indramat modular drive rack and relies on the central supply module for its DC link energy. Integration of the drive into automation lines allows synchronized spindle positioning during tapping, boring, or contour milling operations.

This model draws its main power from a 300 VDC bus and can deliver a continuous output of 50 A, giving it the current density required for medium-frame motor loads. The internal heatsink is cooled by a mounted heatsink blower supplied from an auxiliary line at 220 V/50-60 Hz; the blower prevents thermal saturation of the IGBT stack during extended high-speed cuts. Speed references arrive from the CNC as a Digital (16 bit parallel) word, so velocity resolution remains constant across the full operating band. Together, these electrical and cooling parameters let the drive maintain stable spindle RPM under dynamic chip-load changes.

Environmental and interface features round out the unit’s profile. Operation is specified between 5 to 45 °C, and installation is permitted up to 1000 m above sea level without derating, matching typical shop-floor conditions. Heat removal follows a forced cooling scheme provided by the onboard fan assembly, eliminating the need for cabinet air exchangers. A dedicated second encoder socket accepts feedback signals “for spindle feedback or additional motor feedback,” enabling dual-channel position verification when high precision threading or gear cutting is required. The drive ships with no additional interface option, and its designation “Series 3” indicates a firmware level aligned with later Indramat supply modules.
