The RD52.1-4B-160-R-V1-FW is a three-phase drive controller manufactured by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the RD 500 Drive Controllers series. It modulates motor torque and speed in automated production lines by converting fixed mains input into a variable voltage and frequency output while its integrated braking chopper manages surplus regenerative energy. This architecture allows the unit to stabilize the DC link and supply precise, closed-loop power to induction or synchronous motors during acceleration, constant-speed running, and dynamic deceleration.

At a 4 kHz switching frequency the controller delivers a rated motor output of 160 kW, which corresponds to a rated apparent power of 191 kVA. Supplying this load calls for a rated current of 290 A, and the semiconductors dissipate 6.5 kW that must be removed by forced ventilation. The housing carries a protection rating of IP20, allowing installation in finger-safe but dry enclosures, and the product is classified for environmental class 3K3 locations with controlled temperature and dust levels. Continuous braking demands are met by a chopper path capable of 40 kW through a resistor no lower than 2.2 Ω, ensuring stable DC-bus voltage during sustained regenerative operation.

For rapid stops or load surges the chopper permits 270 kW for 100 ms, and the inverter can supply peak currents of 493 A for one second or 377 A for sixty seconds while the apparent power briefly rises to 248 kVA. Achieving these overload figures requires a cabinet airflow of 0.4 m³/s, so ducting and fan systems must be sized accordingly. With liquid cooling hardware installed the assembly weighs 157 kg, which affects panel reinforcement and vibration isolation.
